The day, and why the road decides it
You leave Amman early, because the whole shape of this day is set by the Desert Highway. It is 235 km and about three hours, and it is the only road south that leaves you enough daylight at the far end to be worth the drive. The alternative, the King's Highway, is 274 km and four and a half hours; it is a better road to look at and it is why the three-day trips take it, but it would eat your afternoon.
The car is yours. There is no coach to fill, no other hotel to collect from, and the pickup time is agreed with you rather than imposed. Wi-Fi and cold water are in the vehicle on both legs, which matters more on the way back than the way down.
Fifteen minutes at the Visitor Centre covers the ticket, the toilets and a look at the model of the site. Then you walk: a kilometre of canyon, and Al-Khazneh at the end of it. Your driver waits; he does not come in with you, because this fare buys the road and not a guide.

Where the day begins
Pickup is from your own hotel in Amman, or from Queen Alia International Airport if you are coming straight off a flight. You agree the time when you book; most travellers on this run leave between six and seven in the morning, which puts you at the Visitor Centre before the heat and before the coaches.
Drop-off is back at the same address. There is no second meeting point and nothing to find on foot — the car comes to you at both ends.
Know before you go
- Carry small dinars. The gate, the carriage drivers and the tea inside the site all run on cash.
- Wear real shoes. The approach is gravel, the Siq floor is uneven stone, and you will cover several kilometres.
- Take a hat and more water than you think. There is almost no shade past the Treasury.
- Check the season before you fix a time. The park opens at 6am from 2 March and 6:30am from 2 October, and closes at 6pm and 5pm.
- Leave room for the walk out. It is over a kilometre back to the gate and it is uphill at the end of a long day.
- In winter, watch the forecast. The Siq is a slot canyon and the authority closes the site when heavy rain brings a flood risk — this fare refunds in full a day out.
